Yantai Library------Marching to the New Century
Yantai Library was founded in October,1956, located at No.20,Sifu Sreet. In September,1998,the new Library was moved to the new Address which is No.2,Huanshan Road,Yantai city.The project of the new Yantai Library ,to which Yantai Party Committee and the Municipal Government have attached great importance,is the k
ey construction project during the period of the "Ninth Five -Year Plan". An investment of 78 million yuan has been made. The new library covers an area of 38440 square metres, with the floorage of the main building being 16516 square metres and the total area of the library buildings being 25000 square metres. It comprises about 1.4 million volumes and offers 1000 seats. It is a modern documentation and information centre with a rational distribution, sophisticated facilities and complete functions. And in 1999,it was honored the title of the "First-Class Library" by the Ministry of Culture.From 1999 to 2002,Yantai Library was awarded the titles of "City-Level Civilization Unit" and "Ten Excellent Model Units of the city"by Yantai Party Committee and the Municipal Government.
Now,Yantai Library has more than 800000 volumes(pieces) of books, newspapers and periodicals ,and modern publications covering all kinds of branches of learning and categories,
among which there are nearly 70000 volumes of ancient books.1230 kinds of current newspapers and periodicals are available.All the year round,the library subscribes to the <Reproduced Materials of Newspapers and Periodicals> from the People's University of China. It has set up a first-class station of CNKI knowledge network sevice.More than 17000 readers hold library cards,Since the opening of the library ,admissions to the library have totalled more than 2000000. Now 22 "service windows" and more than 700 seats are available for readers.Besides, there is a multi-function exhibition hall with 800 square metres and a hall with 243 seats and a 6-channel synchro transliteration system,where people can engage in academic reports.The library is now equipped with 230 sets of computers.All the businesses are managed by means of computers and connected with the international interconnection networ through the 10M fibre-optical and the 120KDDN line for special use and 64 IP sites are offered. Our Yahoo is registered the site of the library, the realm name of which is www.ytlib.sd.cn. Readers and users can enjoy the following services: book-loaning, translating and reading up the literaturefor users.SDI(Selective Dissemination of Information), following-up, reading on multi mediums and inquiring on line,etc.
There are 82 staff members in the library,among whom19 have been awarded the titles of senior
professional posts,26 the titles of semi-senior professional posts and 74% of the members have the record of formal schooling of higher education. The internal administrative setups includes the Office, the General Affairs Section,the Information-Gathering and -Compiling Department, the Book-loaning Department, the technology Department, the department of Research & Guidance,the Children's Department (Yantai Children's Library).The aim of the library is to heighten the scientific and cultural level of the people of Yantai city and spread economic, scientific and technological information. The library will develop a multi-level and omni-directional socialized services and strive to become the firm supporter for the economic construction and all-round social progress of Yantai.
